Surfing the Waves of Technology
So, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, right? I can’t just do all these Flipboard magazines focused on work stuff! A guy has to think about leisure a little bit, too. Thus, early on in my Flipboard content-curation career, I created a magazine devoted to surfing, which has been a lifelong passion since I was lucky enough to live in Hawaii in junior high school, and then California in high school and college. But, as I was hardly the first one to think about doing a surfing magazine, I decided to give mine a twist. As I was a tech guy, and knowing more and more technology was coming into the sport — whether related to boards, fins, wetsuits, wave forecasting, and all kinds of new surf-related sports coming on strong — I chose a different focus. I named my magazine with a nice, long description: Surfing the Waves of Technology – “Riding the endless innovation that has transformed the Sport of Kings to a favorite pastime of technologists and thrill-seekers everywhere.” Notice how I brought in the fact that many others in the tech industry like to surf? That would be primarily in California, but it’s a phenomenon that’s all over — globally, really. (Even here in Minnesota, where buddies of mine surf on Lake Superior.) But I admit, I post content about a lot more than technology and innovation in surfing. Like great videos, stories about huge waves, features on top surfers, and lots of other great content from the many awesome media sites that are part of this huge, worldwide phenomenon of surfing. It’s a sport, a tribe, a lifestyle, all at once. Subscribe to this magazine here. It’s just fun!
